Useful resources for musicians touring Japan.
Touring information changes. Visa procedures change, tax rules are updated, transport systems evolve and old blog posts linger in search results long after they stop being useful. This page brings together the official sources and practical starting points we would check when planning a Japan project.
Before disappearing into government websites.
These Gigging in Japan pages put the main questions into a musician’s context first. Use the official resources below when you need the underlying rules or current procedural information.
Performing in Japan as a Musician
Visas, payment, venues, routing, backline, promotion and the practical questions worth answering before the tour becomes a commitment.
Japan Tour Support
How we approach routing, venues, promotion, collaboration, immigration coordination and practical Japan-side support.
Plan Your Japan Tour
If you already have a project in mind, tell us about the artist, approximate dates, travelling line-up and what you want from Japan.
Permission to perform comes first.
These are the official Japanese government sources we would use as the starting point for work-status and immigration questions.
Working visa: Entertainer
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs page for the Entertainer working visa, including the core visa documents, Certificate of Eligibility information and notes for applicants.
Immigration Information Centers
Official consultation points for general questions about entry and residence procedures, including multilingual support and contact information for enquiries from overseas.
Know what the fee means before agreeing it.
Foreign performers can run into Japanese withholding-tax questions. The exact treatment depends on the payment and circumstances, including whether a tax treaty applies.
Withholding tax for non-residents
The National Tax Agency’s current reference page on withholding from Japan-source income paid to non-residents, including applicable rates and treaty relief.
Japan’s tax treaties
The Ministry of Finance’s current country-by-country list of Japan’s tax conventions, with treaty texts and status information.
If the gear is travelling too, check the customs position.
Professional equipment brought temporarily into Japan may need customs planning, particularly when valuable touring equipment is travelling separately or under an ATA Carnet.
Temporary admission procedures
Japan Customs guidance on temporarily importing eligible goods, including professional equipment, and the role of the ATA Carnet system.
Foreign ATA Carnets
Specific Japan Customs guidance for ATA Carnets issued outside Japan and used for temporary import of eligible professional or entertainment equipment.
Live performance has rights administration too.
For concerts involving administered repertoire, Japan’s music-rights framework may require procedures by the event organiser or other party responsible for the use.
Music users and international repertoire
JASRAC’s English-language information for music users and its international copyright-management network.
Concert and event procedures
JASRAC’s detailed page on procedures for music used at concerts and events in Japan. The page itself is primarily in Japanese.
Useful official travel references.
These are general visitor resources rather than music-industry guidance, but they are useful when building a realistic route and moving people and luggage between dates.
Travelling by rail
Japan National Tourism Organization guidance to the rail network, including local services, limited express trains and the Shinkansen.
IC travel cards
Current guidance on prepaid IC cards such as Suica, PASMO and regional equivalents for trains, buses and everyday travel.
Luggage and storage
Useful information on lockers, luggage storage and delivery services, including practical size and weight limitations that can matter when touring.
Rules change. Old touring advice does not disappear when they do.
We periodically review the links on this page, but government procedures, tax treatment and transport information can change between reviews. For anything that affects whether you can legally work, what tax is due or how equipment enters Japan, check the official source again when planning the actual project.
Trying to turn the information into a workable Japan tour?
Tell us about the artist, music, approximate dates and travelling line-up. We can help identify which questions matter for your particular project and where specialist support may be needed.
